Privacy & Data

Your work stays on your Mac.

Jotr is a private, on-device transcription workspace for macOS. Your audio, video, transcripts, notes, summaries, highlights, annotations, and project files are created, stored, and processed on your Mac.

We do not upload your work to a server, send it to third-party AI services, use it to train models, or build a profile from it.

The short version

  • 01 Your audio, video, transcripts, notes, summaries, highlights, annotations, and project files stay on your Mac.
  • 02 Jotr has no account system: no sign-up, no login, no cloud sync, and no cloud workspace.
  • 03 Jotr does not include analytics, telemetry, advertising SDKs, or tracking tools, and it does not send your work to third-party AI services.
  • 04 Jotr's privacy is not a promise layered on top. It is built into the product: your work is created, stored, and processed on your Mac.

What Runs on Your Mac

Jotr's transcription, review, summary, highlight, and annotation features run on your Mac. Your recordings, videos, transcripts, notes, summaries, highlights, annotations, and project files do not leave your Mac as a result of using those features.

Some features may require a local model download first. After the model is downloaded and the required setup is complete, Jotr's day-to-day content processing can run offline.

Jotr has no cloud editor, no cloud project library, and no cloud workspace. We cannot open a server dashboard and view your recordings, transcripts, summaries, notes, or project files.

Why We Can Make This Promise

Many apps say, "We promise to protect your data."

Jotr's promise is simpler: this data never leaves your Mac in the first place.

  • Jotr's transcription, review, and summary models run on your Mac, not on our servers.
  • Jotr has no account system, so it does not need to store an account profile for you.
  • Jotr has no cloud project library, so your project files are not stored on our servers.
  • Jotr has no collaborative workspace, so your content is not stored in a shared cloud environment.
  • Jotr has no product analytics dashboard, so we do not see how many files you transcribed today, how many summaries you generated, or which project you opened.

Jotr's privacy is not built on complicated server permissions. It is built into the product architecture: your work is created, stored, and processed locally, and we do not collect it on our servers.

What We Do Not Do or Collect

During normal use of the Jotr app, the product is not designed to collect your work content. The following are not things we merely restrict with backend permissions; they are not how Jotr is built:

  • Uploading your audio, video, transcripts, notes, summaries, highlights, annotations, or project files.
  • Sending your work to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, or any other third-party AI service.
  • Using your work to train Jotr or any third-party AI model.
  • Creating cloud account profiles, cloud workspaces, or cloud project histories.
  • Collecting advertising identifiers or behavior data for ad tracking.
  • Automatically uploading local crash reports or diagnostic logs.
  • Selling personal information.
  • Sharing personal information for advertising purposes.
  • Embedding Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, Intercom, Mixpanel, or similar analytics, telemetry, advertising, or behavior-tracking tools.

If you do not choose to send us a file, screenshot, transcript, log, or other material, we cannot see it.

When Jotr Uses the Network

Jotr does not need the network for every content-processing action. It uses the network only for limited, non-content services.

Those network uses may include:

Model Downloads

Some features may require a local model download. Download requests are used to transfer model files to your Mac and verify file integrity. Model downloads do not include your audio, transcripts, summaries, notes, or project files.

Software Updates

Jotr may check whether a newer version is available. An update request may include your current Jotr version and macOS version so the app can show the appropriate update. You can turn off automatic update checks in Settings.

Licenses and Pro Features

If you activate Jotr Pro, Jotr may need to connect to activate, validate, deactivate, or protect the license against abuse. These requests are used to confirm license status and protect paid features. They do not include your audio, transcripts, summaries, notes, or project files.

After the required setup is complete, activated local features can continue to work offline, depending on license status, local model status, and app version.

Free Trials

If you use a Jotr Pro trial, Jotr may perform a limited online check to prevent repeated claims or trial abuse.

This check does not include your audio, video, transcripts, summaries, notes, highlights, annotations, or project files. Jotr has no account system, so trial validation does not require account login and does not require you to provide an email address.

We keep only the minimum information needed to determine trial eligibility, prevent abuse, and maintain service security. If you separately choose to enter an email address for a trial offer, that email is used only to send the related offer or product email and is separate from Jotr's content processing.

Payments and Refunds

If you purchase Jotr Pro, payment is handled by a third-party payment provider. The payment flow may process information needed to complete the purchase, such as email address, order information, payment status, tax information, or refund status. Jotr does not directly store full payment card details.

Optional Email and Offers

If you choose to enter your email address on the website or in the app, such as for product updates, a trial offer, a discount code, or early access, we use that email only for the purpose shown next to the form.

Email is not required to use Jotr. You can unsubscribe from marketing emails.

Support Email

If you contact us at [email protected] or [email protected], we receive your email address and the contents of your message. We use that information to respond to your request.

If you want us to inspect a file, screenshot, transcript, log, or other material, you must send it yourself. Jotr does not upload those materials automatically.

Third-Party Services

Jotr uses third-party services to operate necessary infrastructure, such as website hosting, model distribution, software updates, payment processing, email delivery, and service security.

These services help Jotr operate, but they do not receive your work content from the Jotr app. Your audio, video, transcripts, notes, summaries, highlights, annotations, and project files are not uploaded to us or to third-party AI services because of these services.

The categories of service providers we may use include:

  • Infrastructure and file distribution services.
  • Payment processing services.
  • Email delivery services.
  • Software update services.
  • Security and anti-abuse services.

These services may process limited technical logs for security, payments, email delivery, model downloads, software updates, anti-abuse, or operational purposes. Technical logs are not your work content.

Jotr does not use advertising networks or advertising tracking services.

Local Files and Logs

Jotr stores projects, transcripts, annotations, summaries, highlights, exports, and local app data on your Mac. These files are stored in your user Library folder or another local location you choose.

Jotr's local logs exist only to help diagnose problems. Logs may include errors, operation records, model status, download status, or system environment information. They are not intended to contain your full transcript content or full project content.

Local logs are never uploaded automatically.

If you report a bug, you may choose to send logs, screenshots, or related files by email. If you do not send them, we cannot see them.

Email

If you choose to provide an email address, we use it for the purpose shown when you provide it. For example:

  • Responding to support requests.
  • Handling privacy requests.
  • Sending product updates.
  • Sending trial offers or discount codes.
  • Processing unsubscribe requests.
  • Helping with payment, refund, or license support.

We do not automatically add support or privacy emails to a marketing list.

Marketing emails can be unsubscribed from. Unsubscribing from marketing emails does not affect necessary transactional emails, such as payment, license, refund, or support-related messages.

Sale of Personal Information and Advertising

Jotr does not sell personal information.

Jotr does not share personal information with advertising platforms.

Jotr does not use your work for advertising profiles.

Jotr does not use advertising SDKs, cross-site tracking pixels, or behavioral advertising tools.

AI and Model Training

Jotr does not use your audio, video, transcripts, notes, summaries, highlights, annotations, or project files to train Jotr or third-party AI models.

Jotr does not send your work to third-party AI services for processing unless a future feature clearly explains this before use and obtains your consent.

Children's Privacy

Jotr has no account system and no online profile, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, such as by emailing us, contact [email protected] and we will handle the deletion request where reasonably possible.

Your Rights

Because your work stays on your Mac, we usually cannot access, view, export, or delete the files, transcripts, notes, summaries, highlights, annotations, or logs you create in Jotr. You can manage that content directly on your Mac.

For the limited information you choose to provide to us, such as support emails, privacy emails, optional email subscriptions, trial offer emails, or payment/license support information, you can request access, correction, or deletion by contacting [email protected].

Some information may need to be retained for a period of time, such as payment records, refund records, license records, unsubscribe records, security records, or information we are legally required to keep.

Regional Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, including the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, California, or other regions with privacy laws, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or object to certain processing of personal information we hold about you.

Because Jotr stores your work locally on your Mac, we usually cannot access or delete your local project content for you. For limited information we hold, such as support emails, optional email subscriptions, license, payment, or refund support records, contact [email protected].

Changes to This Policy

If we update this Privacy Policy, we will update the date at the top of the page.

If a change adds important new data collection or changes how your work content is handled, we will explain it where reasonable through the website, in-app notice, release notes, or email.

Jotr's core privacy principle will not change: your work stays on your Mac unless you choose to send it to us, or a future feature clearly explains otherwise before use and obtains your consent.
