Most tools hand you a wall of text and call it done. The real work starts there—listening back, correcting, highlighting, writing from what you found. Jotr is the Mac-native workspace for the complete workflow: from raw recording all the way to finished, usable output.
Read The Story
THE GAP.
1
The gap between "transcribed" and "usable"
1. Jotr exists because most transcription tools optimize for the wrong moment.
2. If you've ever worked from recordings—an interview, a podcast episode, a research session, a long meeting—you know what happens after the transcript arrives. You open the audio again. You find the part where the guest said that one good line. You fix the timestamp that drifted. You pull three quotes into a draft. You export something cleaner for your editor.
3. That gap—between a raw transcript and
something you can actually use
—is where most tools leave you alone. They celebrate the moment the transcription completes, not the hours of work that follow. Jotr is the workspace for those hours.

One person, one workflow,one opinion
1. Jotr is made by one independent developer—a podcast producer who has spent years working with transcripts every week, cleaning them, quoting from them, turning them into show notes and scripts.
2. Every tool I tried was either a thin wrapper around a cloud API, a subscription I resented paying, or a generalist suite where transcription was an afterthought. So I built the tool I wanted: a Mac-native workspace that treats the transcript as a starting point, not a deliverable. Everything runs on your machine. Everything is yours.
3.Jotr reflects one person's strong opinions about how this work should feel.
That's a feature, not a bug.
3
Most recording work is sensitive. That matters.
1. Professional content is rarely meant for public ears. Interview sources who spoke off the record. Confidential legal depositions. Unpublished academic research. Proprietary team strategy meetings or private patient notes.
2. Every time an audio file is routed to a cloud API, it enters someone else's system. For people building serious workflows, that isn't a theoretical concern—it's a hard barrier that prevents them from using modern transcription tools entirely.
3. I built Jotr from day one with
local-only processing
as a non-negotiable bias. When your data stays on your machine, privacy isn't just a promise buried in a terms of service document. It's a structural guarantee because there are simply no servers to receive your files.
4
Your Mac can do this. So it should.
1. Modern Macs run powerful speech recognition and language models locally, quickly, without breaking a sweat. The hardware is already there. The only reason most transcription tools still route your audio to a server is that it's cheaper for them—not faster, not better, not safer for you.
2. Jotr uses local models for everything: transcription, review, summaries, highlights. After a one-time model download, the app works
fully offline.
Your recordings never leave your Mac. Not because we promise they won't—because there's no server for them to go to.
3. That's a technical choice, not a marketing one. It happens to also be a privacy choice. It happens to also be faster. It happens to also work on a plane.
5
Transcription should have a real free starting point.
1. Jotr keeps the first step open: you can start with free transcription, see how the app fits your recordings, and get useful text before deciding whether you need the deeper workflow.
2. Jotr Pro is for the work that gets heavier: fast transcription for longer recordings, AI-assisted review, summaries, highlight cards, structured exports, and translation. The review workspace is still the product. Transcription is the floor everyone stands on.
3. Pro is a $39 one-time purchase. No subscription.

Built for people who work from recordings
1. Jotr is for the kind of work that happens repeatedly, in long sessions, over months and years. Interviews that become articles. Recordings that become podcast episodes. Lectures that become study notes. Meetings that become decisions.
2. This kind of work needs a few things most transcription tools don't provide. Projects that stay open as long as you need them, not as long as your subscription lasts. Transcripts you can return to a year later and still have every timestamp, every highlight, every note intact. Files that live in a folder on your Mac, in open formats, so you're never locked into anyone's platform—including ours.
3. Jotr keeps projects local. Your project files live on your disk, in your control, accessible even without Jotr.
4. This workspace respects how the work actually unfolds across a massive spectrum of use cases:
Podcasters & Creators
Turning raw audio into polished show notes and tightly structured episodes.
Journalists & Writers
Finding the exact quote from a 3-hour interview without ever re-listening to the whole thing.
Lawyers & Legal Teams
Reviewing highly sensitive client depositions offline, where cloud uploads are strictly prohibited by policy.
Researchers & Academics
Coding qualitative interviews and keeping years of study data perfectly organized locally.
Managers & Business Teams
Distilling messy 90-minute strategy meetings or sales calls into clear, actionable decisions.
Students & Learners
Reviewing complex lectures to build study guides, rather than hoarding mass unsearchable audio.

A few things Jotr will never be
Ⅰ
— No accounts.
You don't sign up. You don't log in. You just use the app.
Ⅱ
— No cloud workspace.
Your projects live in a folder on your Mac. You own them the way you own your documents.
Ⅲ
— No analytics, no telemetry, no tracking.
Jotr does not know who you are, how often you open it, or what you transcribe. We like it that way.
Ⅳ
— No subscription.
Jotr Pro is a one-time purchase of $39. No subscription.
Ⅴ
— No feature bloat.
Jotr will stay focused on the review-and-deliver workflow. If you want a video editor or a note-taking app, there are great ones—Jotr is not going to be them.
Ⅵ
— No AI hype.
The models run quietly in the background. They assist. They don't perform.
